Toussaint was clearly named after the Haitian revolutionary leader Toussaint L'Ouverture. Toussaint Delany fought at Fort Wagner alongside a company of the 54th that called itself the "Toussaint Guards". He was wounded but survived the war and became a barber in Nashville.
